Sound stops in playing mode

Whenever I use the program it works fine for maybe a couple minutes; I can hear everything. Then something happens (?) and all of the sudden I'm not hearing the sound of music playing back. When I write notes I can still hear noise and I hear sounds from other programs, but I can't hear the whole thing. When I restart the program I'm good, but it soon mutes again.
