The dashed hyphen in Lyrics entering

• Jul 10, 2015 - 00:03

There are times when I enter the hyphen where it doesn't show. It is primarily if the word syllable is too large. Here is a score example in which it happens.

Where you see "Guar" and "da", there should be a dash in between the words, (I inputed a dash) however, one isn't there. It only shows if I alter measure properties and stretch it to 1.50, which makes the measure appear abnormally large. For the next update, it should be that a dash should spread out the notes automatically so that it's visible. That issue annoys me quite a bit.

(For those who are wondering where I got the file, I tried converting a PDF into musescore, but it didn't work, so I did it by entering it into musescore manually. The PDF was given out for free online.)

Yes, this is normal / correct behavior - hyphens are only displayed if there is sufficient space. This is in accordance to common practice, although indeed there are some publishers who choose to always add extra space just to make sure the hyphens appear. As you've seen, if you prefer that look as well, you can do it by adding stretch, or by moving things manually. It's not out of the question that some day an option might be added to stretch measures automatically for those who prefer that behavior.

BTW, to add stretch you need only select the measure and press "}". You can also move syllables or note individually to create the space just there rather than requiring the whole measure to take up room.
