Can you make a screenshot of View > Synthesizer ?
Probably something is wrong in your installation. Reinstalling *might* help, but more important would be to "Revert to factory settings" for your particular OS as described in the Handbook.
If that doesn't work, then please say what operating system you are on, and tell us if you a soundfont loaded when you go to View / Synthesizer. Also your settings in Edit / Preferences / I/O.
