Saving an Instrument

• Aug 29, 2015 - 23:17

I have been liking the idea of saving the 6-str. bass and 8-str. guitar as instruments in MuseScore's list (2.02), but I can't seem to figure how to do so myself nor find any information on doing it. I see a "Save" and "Load" button in the bottom left corner of the Instruments window but I am unsure what exactly I am saving, where I should save it, or if this feature will allow me to save instruments the way I intend to. Can somebody fill me in on this?

Thanks

Interesting, I had never noticed those buttons before or thought about what they might be for!

I guess the Load button allows you to load an alternate instruments.xml file containing your own custom definitions, but while the Save button does perform a save, I don't see that it does anything but save the current instruments.xml file again - I don't see a way to actually modify it except by hand.

So, you *can* edit instruments.xml by hand - use the Save button to save a copy of it, then edit it with a text editor. You can then tell MuseScore to use your edited file in Edit / Preferences.

However, it may be all you really want to do is save a tempalte containing your instruments - just create and set up a score how you like and and it to your Templates folder, restart MuseScore, and it will be available in the Create New Score wizard
