The degree of rounding dependings on whatever your setting is for "Border radius" in the text style/properties, but the way this is implemented by the Qt libraries we use, the actual degree of rounding also depends on the width of the box. The wider the box, the more rounded the corer for any given radius. Feel free to turn it up for narrower boxes if you prefer.

Seems to me that text margin changes the size of the box. I have turned up A and C to 0.40sp and B to 0.50sp in this picture:

How come the size is the same for FreeSerif?

A and B are closer to the same size in some fonts than others, so the boxes are closer to the same size as well.
