Playback Stops Functioning

• Dec 12, 2010 - 16:56

I've had several instances where playback has stopped working and I managed to capture a screen cast (http://www.screencast-o-matic.com/watch/c6llDdXr3)

I opened a score I'm working on. I had input all of the notes and I was adding fingerings, slurs lines etc. I came to a section that didn't look right so I tried to play it back to check it. Nothing happened.

In the screencast I set it to playback from the beginning. Nothing happens. I then set it to play back from a specific point. Nothing happens.

I hope someone can get some useful information from this

I'm using 0.9.6.3 under WinXP Home SP3

Thanks for the report, unfortunatly the screencast does not help much. Which part of the score does not look right? Do you know how you input this part? Can you attach the file?

When you use playback you see the playback cursor move as it proceeds through the score. What my screencast shows is that this isn't happening. There is nothing wrong with how the score looks. It just isn't playing back. I can almost guarantee that if I close MS and restart it the score will play back properly - I just tried that and it worked as per normal. It's something I've mentioned before and have been unable to give any real clues as to what leads up to it other than what I said in my initial post. I just hoped the screencast might give some clues as to what's (not) happening.

Given that playback works when opening the score from scratch there's probably not much point in attaching it, though I'll gladly do so if you think it'll help

Well, I'm new to MS. This is only the 2nd score I've written. It happened on the other one too. Anyway, The score is attached in case it's useful. It's my own version of a 300 year old piece so I assume there's no copyright issues. If I'm wrong maybe someone could remove the attachment.

It sounds very nice. I can't reproduce the problem though.
One of the issue might be that MuseScore does not handle very well odd repeats. Here the sheet music contains one start repeat and two end repeat and MuseScore is confused. Where should the last end repeat jump ? At the beginning ?

Ok it happened again.

I created a new score. I entered the 1st 4 bars of Voice 1. I quit Note Entry Mode and went back to the start, went back into note entry and entered Voice 2 for those 4 bars. I needed to move some notes up an octave and correct a couple of errors. I used playback to make sure everything was OK. Playback worked.

I entered the next 4 bars, Voice 1 followed by Voice 2 as above. I shifted some notes again and tried playback to check it. Playback didn't work. By that I mean the playback cursor didn't appear and so did not move across the score and there was no audio output. Some screenshots are attached.

Hope this helps

I have also had this issue on more than one score (and I don't think they included repeats at all). It seems much more likely to occur if you've been doing a lot with the program without a restart. It is fixed when I restart every time.

Actually I've noticed playback wasn't the only thing that wasn't working when this occurs. If I remember correctly, while this issue occurred, I also could not select more than one note (like, a whole measure, or click one note and shift-click to another).

I just had this playback problem happen with V1.0RC

I had been working on a score that I'd started in 0.9.6.3. Mainly I was adding a 2nd voice but also making minor amendments - including changing Measure Properties for a couple of bars to allow a different Actual Duration. I used playback several times during these processes and it worked fine.

Once I was happy with the music itself I did some layout changes - inserted line breaks, changed the number of staves per line in Style/Edit General Style. I then noticed something else that needed changing - removing a dot from a minim. On using playback again nothing happened. Again, closing MS and restarting it restored my playback.

My Mixer, Synthesiser etc settings are unchanged from those in the screenshots on my earlier post

Hope this is of some help
