Deleting notes by replacing with a different note
MuseScore v0.9.6.3
Whenever I make a mistake by inputting the wrong note, I would insert the correct note either above or below the initial note hoping the fomer note would be overwritten. However mine would show both old and new notes. I must quit the edit mote and manually delete the incorrect notes manually one by one.
Does Musescore program permit easier editing of notes so the new note would overwrite the former notes thus eliminating manual deletion of unnecessary notes?
Or am I doing this incorrectly?

If you hold Shift while you click on the staff in note entry mode it replaces the existing note instead of adding to the chord.
