Parts

• Dec 12, 2015 - 12:24

I use the File→Parts functionality to create differently layouted versions of MuseScore files, for example to optimize them for different screen sizes. It is a great feature! Having said that, I have two ideas:

1) I would like to suggest an option to copy an existing part. That would be very helpful, since I have to readjust every layout detail at the moment (moved symbols/texts, line breaks etc.) when creating a new part. Creating slightly different parts might become a lot easier.

2) At the moment, I can only choose instruments to be displayed in a certain part when creating the part. The instruments dialog is useless afterwards - it works only for the main part (if that is called a part, anyway…). Is that behaviour intended?

Thanks for your reply!

It is indeed intended that you cannot edit the basic makeup of a part after the fact. It would in theory be possible to allow it, but I think it would probably not be trivial. These are good idea, though. It's not really the use case the facility was intended for, but it would be nice if it could be more flexible. BTW, if you do your manual adjustments *before* generating the parts, those adjustments should be preserved. Not the line breaks - those are assumed to need to be different for each part and would in "regular" usage as well as when optimizing for different screen sizes.

Hi Marc, thanks for your reply.

I can understand to some point that prohibiting to edit existing parts makes sense. I just want to point out that a 'copy part' button in the parts window would make this more or less superfluous (if one could choose the instruments directly after copying the part). I cannot really estimate the effort it would need to implement this, but I know there is some space left next to the 'delete' button ;-)
