USB MIDI not recognized, please advise

• Feb 20, 2011 - 01:15

I am evaluating about a dozen music notation apps for midi capture.
musescore is the first one where i cannot get the USB MIDI to be seen by the app.
Finale, Sibelius, and others work first time both in and out: all found and set the correct USB MIDI as default without having to manually set any preferences.

XP SP3, Muse 0.9.6.3, 4G ram

Moussorgsky example plays thru my computer audio, but that's it.
Edit> Preferences> I/O shows blank to choose from for MIDI IN device.
I tried various settings for MIDI output and restarted the program

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

I've never tried using MIDI input in MuseScore, but I know it does basically work. However, be aware it is step-time entry only - there is no real-time MIDI transcription facility. And the import of MIDI files doesn't have a lot of quantization-type controls, meaning you'll likely end up doing more manual fixups than with some other programs. MuseScore is a fantastic program in many ways, but if your primary concern is MIDI capture, it's not likely to be a good fit. On the other hand, I personally find direct note entry using the computer keyboard *far* more efficient than real-time MIDI input in any program I have ever used.

I'm learning Muse by using Step-entry mode, all qtr notes, and it's great.
The initial blank MIDI device was sporadic -- sometimes it would be there and sometimes not!
(had nothing to do with rebooting)

Here's my next question tho:
After I have (4-note) chords entered on a single staff via MIDI, SPLIT STAFF drops the bottom notes (consistently) when transferred to the bass clef staff.
Is this a bug or am i doing something wrong for SPLIT STAFF??
