Stranger behaviour of note entry palette

• Feb 20, 2011 - 12:42

I find the note entry palette a bit irritating in its behaviour. It makes sense for the dot to switch itself off after one use, as consecutive dotted notes are uncommon, but if I select a voice I would like it to stay selected until I explicitly select another. Likewise If I select a note length, I would like it to stay selected, and the same (though less certainly) with rests. Instead I find that anytime I click on the note entry palette I must then read through it most carefully to make sure that nothing else has changed. Also toggling the 'N' button should have no effect on the state of any other buttons on the tool palette.

Are you saying you are finding your voice selection does *not* stick - every time you enter a note, it reverts back to voice 1? I think I saw a that happen once, but it went away when I tried to reproduce. Certainly it's not *supposed* to work that way voice selection should stick for as long as you remain in note entry mode. Ditto with note length selection. Or maybe you're saying you'd like these settings to survive exit/re-entry? I could sometimes see wanting that, but other times I probably would probably end up forgetting and shooting myself in the foot, entering notes in the wrong voice by accident. Maybe an option to allow either behavior? I'd personally be inclined to want note length to stick but not voice selection.

I find that the selected voice jumps around when I change note length or exit/re-enter note entry. Any activity (such as inserting a line break) seems liable to flip the settings in the note entry tool bar. I feel that the tool bar is trying to second-guess what I'm going to do and making a poor job of it. Voice and note length should stick until explicitly changed, i.e. if I select crotchets and voice x all subsequent input should be crotchets to voice x, and the only way to change this should be by deliberately clicking on another voice or another note length. If I select dotted crotchets for voice 2 and then notice that I'm not in note entry mode, selecting note entry mode should not land me with some other note length in some other voice, so that I have to select again (assuming I notice before making a mess). I'm not sure, but what I guess is happening is that when I re-enter note entry mode after leaving it (accidentally or otherwise) the pallette discards its current settings and reverts to the last settings of voice and note length that it had for note entry.
