Old files unable to open

• Jan 15, 2016 - 00:58

Can anyone figure out why the majority of my song files from 2011 won't open today? I'm quite frustrated... _Be Thou My Vision.mscz

The attached file is corrupted and its content does not resemble at all a proper MuseScore file.

Most of the content is blank (zeros). Some strings extracted from that file

Mac OS X
com.apple.quarantine
com.apple.metadata:kMDItemWhereFroms
This resource fork intentionally left blank

may suggest that possibly your hard drive may got corrupted (physically or by a virus?). Also the size of the file is exactly 4kB (4096 bytes, probably block size on your hard disk), suggesting corruption too.

Are all other files you cannot open also exactly the same size?

It's weird it has apple info attached to it as I only use a PC.

Yes. Most of them are 4 KB. Is there anything I can do to restore them? I also noticed that the file has .mscz: as the file type. Is there any way to try to remove the : at the end? Would that change anything?

Thanks!

I'm afraid you'll probably need to be looking into disk recovery tools if you want to recover this file or others like it. Are you *sure* that is the actual score, and there isn't some other version of the file wityhout the final ":"? Removing a colon from the filename is easy, just rename the file, but it won't fix the basic problem that this file isn't even close to being a valid MuseScore file.
