A gentle melody w simple accompaniment

• Mar 11, 2011 - 14:39

The melody of this song was written by a friend of mine. What you have before you is really a rough draft of a simple harmony I tried. There are a couple points I need to find something different, like the two repeated "g"s in the harmony, for example.

Talk to me, people!

In measure 5 I change the D to an F to avoid parallel fifths. In measure 23 I changed the G to a C to give it some movement. I changed a few other notes just because I liked them better. Compare and see what you think.

i'm actually partial toward parallel fifths. probably because i'm untrained and also bc i was a child of the 80s, specifically rock music, which is replete w parallel fifths.

i have been busy but am now going to spend some time living with your text and forgetting mine. this (i believe) will help me evaluate what's going on in both pieces. i can tell you even before i do that, i see the inevitable logic in and am pleased by what you've done with the ending. i mean if i'm going to step and crawl up to a b and can then go back down step-wise, it should be done.

so there's that.

David,

You'll see I accepted most of the harmony choices you suggested. Also I switched a couple things around and took out the bit of harmony that slid up a half step. It seemed interesting at the time I wrote it, but it just didn't fit the rest of what I was doing. I probably have parallel fifths in there, I didn't check (see my above explanation about that).

If you want to make a comment, I'd be interested in hearing what you have to say. I'm going to sit on this a little while, take a final look at it, and then send it along to the friend that wrote the melody. Thanks for your help in making it better!

I think I prefer the harmony in the first half. I made three changes to the second half to match the first. Feel free to adopt or reject.

Also I was only offering minor suggestions to a work you had already created. You can credit me if you want, but I don't consider it necessary and was kind of surprised to see my name at the top!
