Where did my score go?

• Feb 6, 2016 - 20:56

I was working on a score…. somehow, it closed. So I reopened it from the saved file. Did some work on it, saving as I went along. Was about to quit the application, it asked if I wanted to save the changes, I said yes… when reopening the score, it opened an older version of the score! Searching the title, I cannot find another saved version anywhere. all that work, gone! Searching the file title I cannot find another version anywhere . . Any idea what might have happened? Where is the version with all the work I had been doing on it?

When you say "somehow, it closed", do you mean that MsueScore crashed? And then you restarted MuseScore and it asked if you wanted to recover your previous session, and you answered "yes"? If so, MuseScore created a *copy* of your score based on an auto-saved version; it did not used your saved score. When you saved this recovered score, MuseScore asked you where to save it, and you presumably chose a location - or accepted the default, which might not have been the same location as your original. If you don't remember which folder you chose, then you can try doing a search of your drive to find the file.

No that's not what happened. The app did not crash. Just the file closed. So I reopened the file I was working on. I was NOT asked if I wanted to save it or where…. I DID search the hard drive for the copy, as I said. There is nothing, at least, nothing with the same title.

I don't understand what you mean when you say "the file closed". Do you mean you closed it? If so, and it asked you if you wanted to save your work, did you say yes? I realize these sound like dumb questions, but you have to understand, if there is no crash and you save your work, there is pretty much nothing that could possibly go wrong, so somehow there must be something else going on, and I am trying to understand what.

Anyhow, see https://musescore.org/en/node/52116 for information on how MsueScore manages backup copies and how you can try to recover from one.

That's the thing, none of that happened. It appeared as if the page I was working on 'minimized', as if it was sent to the dock… I seem to remember touching a key , don't know which one, and it disappeared . . but if I reopened the file, it should have just left the dock (or wherever it went) and reappeared. And the edits should have been saved to the file I opened, which was the original file.

Anyway, it's sort of moot now, as I had to go back and redo what I had done. File is finished. Never had anything like this happen before, so . . . hopefully it won't happen again.
