Musescore 3 Won't Playback Sometimes
Sometimes when I have Musescore open (I've gotten the latest download) and click the play button, it just doesn't do anything. Hitting space doesn't do anything either. Every time it happens, the only way to get it to work again is to close and reopen it. Does anyone know what might be causing it?

Well that one's a little different, because when it happens to me, the cursor doesn't even appear. Nothing at all happens, but the button up top still gets grayed out like it would when playing normally.

What OS (operating system)?
What version MuseScore?
Do you hear sounds when entering notes into a score?
Have you tried a factory reset?

I have the exact same problem. The only solution - close and reopen. That means all settings are correct.
I ran into this issue when I had a 'Fine' (from the repeats and jumps menu) in the previous movement. Musescore would not play after that movement. I removed the 'Fine' and replaced it with staff text. Issue resolved.
My exact problem! (Windows 10 user, most recent update, factory reset did nothing). I'm downgrading to MuseScore 2. Glad I have Finale as well for playback!

See https://musescore.org/en/node/96811 for other suggestions on how to workaround whatever problems on your system are preventing the sound from working. No need to re-expose yourself to the thousands of bugs that have been fixed since MuseScore 2.

I'm used to Musescore 2 more than 3. How can I download Musescore 2? I found some older versions but couldn't figure it out.

Older versions for some OS's can be found on the download page. but, there are very few significant differences other than just everything looking and sounding much better. Onkly a few menu items changed, etc. So the few minutes it takes to get used to a couple of new locations will pay for itself a thousand times over with all the time you save due to how much better everything works by default and also the time-saving features not found in MuseScore 2.
I saw the same thing. As with others Wondows 10 & latest Musescore 3. Hit the play button and usually it plays ... but sometimes the icons grey out and nothing happens. sometimes it starts after a 2 - 5 second delay ... but if I close and reopen, it plays. annoying but not a show stopper

Running Win10, Musescore3.5.2 - - I had this problem today too - and it turned out to be because I had a 2nd ending in the first measure. As soon as I removed it, it played just fine.
It sure is helpful to be able to look things up!!
My Musescore stopped playing most of the time after I upgraded to the latest Windows 10 patch. It might play a couple of times. Then the play button is pushed but nothing happens. Then I might click on a note and then Musescore freezes completely. I upgraded to the latest Musescore version (using the "repair" option) and that did not fix it.

I think it occurs after my computer has locked. When I unlock it Musescore won't play anymore.

If you lock/sleep your PC and wake it up again, Windows re-enumerates the audio devices but fails to notify our underlying libraries of that.
Try pressing the MIDI input toolbar button twice next time after unlocking your PC and before attempting playback.

This worked for me, thx.

Be careful you are not double clicking, or otherwise entering edit mode.
Try pressing Esc if this happens again.

I have this problem too, Win 10 - I have to go into preferences I/O and restart midi and audio devices

Instead of using Preferences: I/O, try double clicking the 'MIDI input' button located on the toolbar.
