text size for instruments

• Dec 31, 2014 - 23:58

I have added 2 horn parts to a score and the font size for the instrument name is about 3. Under style, text size, instrument long/short the font size is 12. Am I doing something wrong? Version 1.3, score attached

The size of text, just like all elements in MuseScore, is scaled according to the setting you make in Layout / Page Settings / Space. Your score is set to a very small space value in order to fit all the staves on a sheet of standard paper, so the text is shrunk as well.

Relatively speaking, your staff names look fine to me FWIW - they are in proportion to the size of the overall music. But if you really want oversized staff names, you can increase the size in text style, but in 1.3, this may not take effect until you save/reload and regenerate the names (eg, delete them and retype them). In 2.0, text style changes will affect existing text.

BTW, you attached the backup copy of your score rather than the real file - the backup copy ends in a comma and starts with a period.

Thanks for your comment, which makes sense. However, in the same score there are about three different sizes of text for the instrument names. Really it is just an appearance issue.

Another problem, I have 20 instruments (staffs) but when I go to "parts" to print them up, the list shows only 16 parts, but 20 instruments?

This time I attached the actual score, not the backup. Thanks for the help!! I enjoy using Musescore and appreciate all the work you have done on users behalf!.

There are definitely some issues with instrument name sizing in 1.3 that can be seen if you add instruments after score creation and/or change score scaling between adds. Also instruments with the flat sign in the name have their own glitches. This should all be much better for 2.0. Meanwhile, if you find yourself in a situation with mismatched instrument name sizes, it usually works to change the text style, then delete the instrument names and retype them (or Change Instrument back to themselves), which will cause them all to be regenerated with the current text style. A pain, but at least it's already fixed for 2.0.

As for number of instruments, first some clarification: a part can possibly contain multiple instruments (you might print a single "part" that has both flute 1 & flute 2 on it, for instance), and an instrument might have multiple staves (piano, harp, and organ music, most obviously). And just because an instrument is in the score doesn't mean there is autoamtically a part for it. There are only as many parts as you create yourself in File / Parts. Looks like you haven't created parts for some of your isntruments yet. That's what the "New" button is for.

Also, be sure each part actually contains an instrument, and each instruemnt belongs to a part.. Looks like at least one of the parts you created (part-16) doesn't have an instrument, and parts 1 & 2 are both set to oboe. I'm guessing maybe you started with a template then modified it, but you didn't update the parts?

Ah. I am too hasty I guess. I added 2 instruments (horns) through "create" "instruments" and assumed that a part would be assigned to it. I take it I should add an instrument, then go to "file" "parts" and create a part before I start writing music into the staff!
Your replies are very speedy and much appreciate. (and I just sent at least some money to musescore...).
Best regards.

PS: I'm assuming V2.0 is beta (or ready to download?).

Actually, it doesn't matter when you go to File / Parts and fix that up. I usually don't bother until I'm done entering all notes, actually. As long as you do it before actually generating the parts, obviously.

In 2.0, the "New All" not only defines all the parts, but actually generates them as well, and they are saved with and linked to the score, so changing the score automatically updates the parts. This is great, but on large scores, it does slow done editing to have the linked parts, so that's all the more reason no to bother with the parts until you are essentiually done with note entry.
