Using Larsen Font

• Oct 7, 2015 - 17:39

Over three years ago, I posted a thread (https://musescore.org/en/node/17845#comment-64708) about using Larsen ITM Font a system of symbols for ornamentation in Irish traditional music, gradually being used more and more widely, basically symbols for cuts, rolls, taps etc which would appear above given notes. The thread is self-explanatory. I did create SVG files for each of the symbols I was interested (attached below). Can anyone explain how I add them to the customisable palettes that were due to come out with 2.0 please?

Well I got as far as creating a custom palette but when I tried to drag in SVG files of the font symbols they overwhelmed the palette. The first I tried was so huge you couldn't see the edges. Either I'm doing something wrong or the SVG file is much too big . . . but I don't know to create the right size file/symbol size from the original font.

By default, SVG drawings in MuseScore are scaled at 10 SVG pixels = 1 score sp. If the symbols you are adding have a constant (or preferred) size, it is wise to create the SVG drawings in the first place with this scale in mind. The occasional larger or smaller symbol can be scaled via the Inspector.

One would assume that the graphic programme by which you created the original SVG drawings has a command to scale them. Not knowing which programme you used, I cannot tell you more.

The Inspector is used on inserted graphics much like on any other kind of score element: select the image in the score and, in the Inspector window, use the "Scale" spin box to reduce the image scaling; it is better to keep the "Lock aspect ratio" box checked, so that the image will scale the same both along the x and along the y axes.

This would not change the image in the palette, though, only a single image individually in the score.

You may try to modify the palette cell, though. Right-click the SVG in the palette, choose "Properties" and then change the spin box "Content scale" to change its scaling. Hopefully, this would reduce the size of the image in the palette, but I never tried this myself.
