Create an ossia?

Ossias aren't really supported. I suppose you could add an extra staff for the ossia and make all the measures invisible apart from the ossia passage.

Thank you for your kind answer.
I'll do what you suggest.

You should also experiment with Style > Edit Style and mark the box next to "Hide empty staves" That way it hides all the staves for the ossia part expect for the line that the ossia is on. That way you only have to mark a few measures as invisible rather than going through the whole piece one by one.

I happen to need ossias, too, to write ancient music which exists in many variations.
Trying your solution, I met the following:
1) When there is an ossia, the line that connects its staff (even if all other measures are hidden) does show its ugly face! Trying to make it disappear, it does so *completely*, i.e. from the whole system...
2) The left-most measure bar doesn't show, since it belongs to the preceding, hidden measure.
3) It was impossible to select a group of measures and then make them disappear; every time I select a group of measures (for example, when the ossia has to be on the very first system) and try to right-click with the mouse, the selection is reduced to the measure that happens to be under the mouse pointer at the moment of right-clicking. Very frustrating, I assure you...

Thank you very much!
I found your comment really useful and it worked perfectly for my needs.

Has anything changed with regard to adding Ossias in the 7 years that have passed since this original post?
Today, I imported a score with an Ossia created by SmartScore to MuseScore using MusicXML.
MuseScore inserted the Ossia as lowest stave of my system (in this case, the piano left hand).
Then MuseScore continued with the rest of my score.
I used this post and achieved satisfactory results:

Is it still necessary to do the above steps, or is there now a better way?

The above is still one way. There is now another decent option as well: create the ossia separately, use the new-for-2.0 "Image capture" tool (icon on right of main toolbar) to make a graphic of it, insert the graphic into your score (eg, using drag & drop. In the nightly builds from the master that will eventually become 2.1, there will also be another option: a "cutaway" option in Staff Properties to specify an individual staff's measure should be blanked out when empty, combiend with a new option to hide a given staff when empty without needing to turn on "Hide empoty staves" score-wide.

The image capture tool indeed could be used for ossias. Am I right that you have to insert a vertical frame at the right spot to use images? ah, no, images can be attached to notes as well ++1!
What I like is that svg format is supported for image out- and input.
(Future wishes regarding svg format:
svg output: Noteheads, clefs as vectors instead of raster images
svg input: correct rendering of (cropped) viewbox.)

Thank you for your responses.
Perhaps I should have mentioned that my primary use of MuseScore is to create playable files for our community chorus members to use when rehearsing at home.
I do not mean to downplay the image capture tool solution offered above, but I don't see how that would help, other than to view the Ossia on a printed score. It would not help my singers to hear the Ossia being played, like they can do with the other SATB parts to our songs.

Correct. MuseScore is a notation program first and foremost, and not everythi that can be notated will play back automatically. Still, there are other new features that can help woth that. For example, you can mark a staff invisible, meaning it won't display at all even when there are notes. A hidden playback staff would allow you to provide playback for the ossia. Or you could smply enter the notes in the main staff n another voice and make them invisible, although that will generally affect layout amd may or may not do what you want.

Hiding the Ossia staff also hides other empty staves, which can produce unwanted results.
MuseScore can hide just measures, but is there a way to hide more than one measure at a time?
(This concern was mentioned by HosAdeeb in 2009. See his comment (3), above.)

You can keep any given staff from being hidden by setting the "Never hide" property in Staff Properties,. As I mentioned before, a future release will include a "Hide when empty" staff property, which will basically be just like turning on "Hide empty staves" for a given staff only, no need to set the others to "Never hide", as well as a "cutaway" option that will make all empty measures for a staff invisible. Meanwhile, you can set individual measures invisible in Measure Properties, and use the arrow buttons on the bottom of the dialog to move through measure by measure. I wouldn't recommend doing that for an entire score though - much better to use Hide empty staves do you only need to make measure invisible on the specific systems containing the ossia.
To me, the graphic is the easier way for now. And as I mentioned, it's easy enough to get the playback to using an invisible staff (set it in Edit / Instruments).
