Jump command and text styles

• Jan 17, 2016 - 18:39

Hi,

the junp command D.S. al Coda has the text style "repeat text right". The Coda-sign that maks the jump start also has this style. Because this sign is too small for my needs, I increased the text size of the style "repeat text right". But now the text D.S. al Coda is too big. So I gave the D.S. al Coda the style "repeat text" (without left or right) an set the text size of this style to the desired value. So far everything is OK.

When I start MuseScore 2.0.2 now and load the File, my D.S. al Coda again has the text style "repeat text right". So it seems that my changes are not saved. Is this a feature or an bug?

Changes to text styles or to individual elements are all saved as part of a specific score; they are not global to all scores. So it's normal that *other* scores wouldn't see the changes you made to this one. But changes made to a score should in general be preserved of course. I think the problem is that "repeat text" is meant to be obsolete, replaced by the left / right variations, and is provided only for backwards compatibility with previous versions of MuseScore. And it gets converted to the regular style on load. Probably we should only do that for scores actually created with an older version, so in that sense it's a bug. But also, we should probably just disallow you from using "Repeat Text" any more - that's not really a good way to solve the problem at hand. There is too much special handling of repeats within MuseScore to want to depend on that.

What I'd recommend is not messing with text style at all for this purpose, but instead just creating a larger coda sign (via Text Properties) as needed. Or, if you expect to need it a lot, create one and add it to your palette as described in the Handbook under "Custom palette". Then you can use it any time you like in any score without needing to mess with the text styles in those scores.

BTW, if you *do* decide to mess with customizing text styles, be aware that if you make a change to a text style and you want this available to other scores, you have three options, depending on how pervasive you wan thte change to be. If you just want to pick and choose which scores get the modified text style, go to Style / Save Style and save the style of the customized score. Then you load this style into other scores on demand. if you think you will want a bunch of scores all for a particular type of ensemble to have this style, you could save your customzied score as a template (ie, save it to your Templates folder) and select it from the template list when creating future scores. Or if you want it appliued by default to all scores, you can save the style then specify it as the default style in Edit / Preferences / Score.
