No Playback or Sound

• Jun 7, 2009 - 07:43

I have installed MuseScore Version 0.9.4, Revision 1505 in Ubuntu Linux 9.04 (Jaunty), using the Ubuntu Add/Remove Applications option. However, when I attempt to play the pre-installed piece (Promenade) immediately following installation i.e. without doing ANYTHING else:-

1. The 'Start Sequencer Play' button changes colour when I click it, so I assume that the control is working, BUT there is no indication in the Music of where the Sequencer is playing (as I assume there should be), so I am concerned that in fact the Sequencer is NOT playing.

2. There is no Sound, which would be understandable if the Music is NOT actually playing! My I/O Preferences (which I have not altered) are set to the Internal Synthesiser, with the FluidR3_GM.sf2 SoundFont, and the default ALSA Audio.

Any suggestions welcome!

If you have any other audio software open you should then you should quit them first before starting MuseScore. The other software may be restricting access to the sound card. See also the Linux heading under Installation

Dear David Bolton,

Many thanks for replying to my Post, and particularly the tip about looking at the Linux heading under Installation. I had simply installed MuseScore from Add/Remove Applications in Ubuntu Linux 9.04 (Jaunty); this normally picks up any dependencies such as the fact that you need to install Jack Control, but NOT in this case!

I have now installed Jack Control, and configured it as per the Linux Installation instructions, Although the standard Alsa Driver does not work, I have been able to set up the Jack Server connection, and playback now works!

Many, many thanks for your help; you've certainly saved me an awful lot of time and effort in solving this problem. I can now get on and convert my Music Score Files which were created using a Windows Program called Personal Composer into MuseScore format; yet another step in my aim to ditch Windows and switch to Linux.

Regards,

Alan Jordan
