Change the key signature in the middle of a staff

• May 16, 2012 - 13:24

Can I change the key signature in the middle of a staff? I am modulating from A major to E major in the middle of the staff, but when I tried to create key signature on the selected measure it did not work.

Dear yolz

It is not common musical practice to change the key signature in the middle of a measure or bar. To change the key signature at the beginning of a bar or measure, open the palette by clicking on F9 (if it isn't already open), open up the key signatures, and drag the desired key signature to the bar/measure you want.

If, however, you want to change the key signature in the middle of a measure/bar, it is best to use accidentals and start the new key signature at the beginning of the next measure/bar.

If you really, really, really need to change the key signature in the middle of a measure/bar, then I suggest you create two irregular measures of shorter time signatures, then hide the barline between them and the key signature(s). You will need to read up in the handbook/manual about irregular measures and making items invisible.

Hope that helps!

Cheers,
E.

I'm not sure he was asking about changing in the middle of a bar (although someone else asked about that recently) - I interpreted the question as being at the beginning of a bar that just happened to not be the first bar of a system. The answer is indeed drag and drop - just be sure not to drop until the measure highlights.

you create a double bar on the measure that you want to change the key signature on. then you change the key to whatever you want it to be
