Rests remain in bar
Why do whole bar rests remain in each bar, even though it is concurrently showing all the notes I have inserted?

probably because you have not entered the notes in Voice 1
Thanks for this. There is supposed to be only one voice, so how do I set it to one voice to get rid of the rests? (sorry but I'm a beginner...)

Swap voice 1 with whatever voice you (accidentially) entered

I really appreciate your help - file attached. It only occurrs in the upbeat and first bar of the bass part. You will see I'm only a beginner, so any other comments would be appreciated!

Here we go. You had entered the first 2 measures in the bass part as voice 3 (seen by the colour they turn into if selected). I swapped them with voice 1 and deleted the rests (you can only delete rests that are not in voice 1)
