Soundfont not working on linux!!!
The generaluser soundfont isn't working on my linux computer (it worked when I had windows). On the synthesizer where you select your soundfont it doesn't have an icon like the others, and when you select and try to play it no sound comes out

How did you install the General User soundfont?
This could be a permissions issue - have you checked to see whether MuseScore has permission to access the file?
I need to know the answer to the first 3 questions before I can attempt an answer.

I'm using Ubuntu 13.10, but I tried 12.04 and that didn't work either.
I'm using Musescore Version 1.3, Build 5702
I installed the soundfont from here: http://musescore.org/en/handbook/soundfont (I also got the FluidR3 from that page which is working, but I need the generaluser).
How do I check the permission?

Navigate to the folder where the soundfont is: usr/share/sounds/sf2
If you right click the file you should be able to establish the owner.
It's possible you need to set the ownership of that folder to your login rather than root.

BTW have you considered using Ubuntu Studio rather than plain vanilla Ubuntu?
It's specifically set up for people working music and media production, and many of these wrinkles have already been sorted.

how did you get it onto your machine? FTP as ASCII possibly? It comes as a ZIP archive, did you unzip it on your Linux box?

Yes I unzipped it and that made a new folder and I found the sf2 file in that folder. Then I moved the soundfont over to where my other soundfont files are using the "gksudo nautilus" terminal command (otherwise I don't have permission to add anything to that folder).
What is FTP as ASCII?

an acient but still used file transfer protocol, which could convert text tiles on the fly. Of cource doing that in binary files has the potential of render these useless
