Startup Center and Palettes not rendered

• Jun 1, 2020 - 16:01

Maybe it's a problem with Qt, but both the "Startup Center" and "Palettes" are empty/transparent when I try to use Musescore. They used to render just fine. I use Windows 10 and suppose it's the result of installing something else, but I have no clue as to what software or update. Removing and reinstalling musescore (or older versions) didn't solve a thing and going back to a restore point is out of the question.

Does anybody have a solution or an idea what I can try next? Or perhpas how I might be able to generate some debugging info?

Which version of MuseScore specifically (see Help / About)? Some older versions had an issue with certain graphics drivers, mostly that should be working in the current 3.4.2. If not, probably it means you have a graphics driver that still isn't fully supported. Be sure to update your drivers, and MuseScore if application. If that doesn't fix it, there are then workarounds that can be tried to force MuseScore to use software simulation of the missing features in your graphics driver (at least I think that's the best way to describe what the workarounds do).

Well it's got definately something to do with the driver: when I use the "microsoft basic display adapter" driver these panels get rendered. Still I can't remember having changed it, and the last driver update was back in 2015 (GeForce 6600)

How do I "force musescore to use software simulation"? If that fixes the problem, I'd be more or less happy ... more or less 'cause I just noticed that another application using Qt has the same problem, so "more" is in case I can use the same fix there :)

There is an environment variable QT_OPENGL, see https://doc.qt.io/qt-5.9/windows-requirements.html for more info. The possible values to try are "desktop", "angle", or "software". It's a little bit of trial and error because we don't know what specifically might be wrong with your graphics driver (you did try updating it?). One of my machines had a driver that didn't support OpenGL properly and the "angle" settings fixed it.

As for how to set environment variables, you do a web search for more info, but I recall there being some dialog that would do this system-wide.
