My guess is you are using a non-General-MIDI soundfont. Using the default, claves sound like claves. Unless, I suppose, you enter the notes onto a triangle staff then copy paste to a clave staff, or try changing the staff from triangle to claves, then they would still sound like triangles.

thanks. I discovered that if I change the pitch I get different instruments so E=Clave even though the choice I made gave a triangle sound.

I did change the staff to clave sound but that didn't do it. Had to change the pitch on the clave line.

Right, it's by design that merely changing a staff won't change the notes already present.
