Styles.... guitar fingering size and default style.

• Feb 23, 2021 - 09:26

I want to increase the text size for guitar fingering and guitar string. I find that size 8 is rather small. I have tried following the instructions in the manual (Load/Save Style) to no avail. I wish to increase the font size to Edwin size 10. I have altered the size in the Format - Style window, and then saved the style (as" Larger fingering"). I have tried several different ways to apply the new style, the latest is - I have closed MS, re-opened it and reloaded a score, then loaded the new style. According to the handbook, "All existing styles in the score should update automatically." They don't.

I have looked at the style file ("Larger fingering") in Notepad and see that the values have been correctly set -viz--

lhGuitarFingeringFontFace>Edwin
lhGuitarFingeringFontSize>10
lhGuitarFingeringLineSpacing>1 etc
(for this post I have taken out the leading < character as it prevents the rest of the text displaying in this post)

and similarly for the string data

so I am puzzled as to what to do next. I would also like to set these increased sizes as a default style, but cannot find how to do this. What am I missing?
I attach a score and the style file.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you
Andrew

Not sure where you are seeing instructions about loading and saving style, but it's not directly relevant to simply changing the style for a score. That's done in the Inspector or in Format / Style. If after making the change, you feel like then saving a style file you can load into other scores as well, that's fine, but you don't need to edit files to do that, just save the MSS then load it into another score. Or to make that MSS file the default for all scores, go to Edit / Preferences / Score.

Thank you Marc for your response. Things are becoming clearer - a number of things have come to light since I read and thought about your reply . Starting with your last sentence, I went to Edit/Preferences/Score and selected my "Larger Fingering" style as the default. I was not aware how to do this before I read your comment. I then created a simple one line score for guitar and attempted to enter some left hand fingering. This appeared not to work, ie it was still at size 8 when it should be 10, so I wondered why. It then dawned on me that I was not selecting the correct option in the Fingering palette!!! I have been in the habit of selecting from the top line of the palette, when I should have been selecting from the second line!! All has suddenly become clear, and now everything works as it should.
It is quite extraordinary I find. I have been using MS for several years, but it has taken me this long to fathom out some of the finer details. Thank you again for prompting me along the correct path. One more thing under my belt.

Excellent! One other thing you might find useful, then, if you mostly write for guitar as opposed to piano - you can delete those piano fingerings, or at least move them to the end of the palette, by just dragging them. Even if you delete them, they aren't completely gone, they just get hidden behind the "More" button.

I write for a variety of ensembles, including string groups (I am really an orchestral viola player), so I will leave the "piano" fingerings where they are I think, as they are applicable to string groups. But thank you for the tip.
I have enlarged the piano fingerings to 10 pt as well in the style template.

It is amazing how suddenly something becomes clear, and it makes me wonder why it took me so long to cotton on to it.

Thank you once again
