spacing between staves
i have one section of the music (bar 54 -55) in which the staves are separated widely - what have I done

And in the attached PDF (why two?) the systems for measures 54-55 are not "separated wildly".

There is, however, a gap between 56 and 57, presumably a horizontal frame.
And meassure 7 (and 14) is pretty wide, presumably a system break. But that is dealt with in https://musescore.org/en/node/320926 and https://musescore.org/en/node/320927

I have fixed bar 7
Bars 54 & 55 are spread horizontally down the page so they take up more than half the page - the systems need to be closer together so bar 54 & 55 fit at top half of the page s & then bar 56 & 57 fit in bottom half. 56 & 57 need to be separated.

There is no point to attach the same PDF the 3rd time...
There's nothing wrong with measures 54 and 55 at all. But if you want them further up, you need to fix measures 7 (no, it is not fixed, not in that PDF) and 14, to have them in the same system as 5-6 resp. 12-13.
