Easy fix of the small icons bug
Currently in MuseScore 3, there is a bug that causes all the icons to appear so small that they're essentially unreadable. From what I've read on the forum, currently the only way to fix this is to launch MuseScore from the command line and specify the DPI of your monitor. But most people won't be able to do this, because despite the manual, most of the people still won't be able to run the command successfully and/or don't know what the DPI value of their monitor is. For that I suggest a feature in the Musescore preferences menu that would allow you to manually override the autodetection of your monitor's DPI. The problem with not knowing the DPI of the monitor could be simply fixed by trial and error (but you wouldn't have to repeatedly turn on MuseScore with the command line).

To be clear, though: the bug you mention is rare, only affects a few systems (only a few dozen reports out of millions of installations). And technically, the bug isn't with MuseScore but with the OS or device driver or whatever system component it is that is failing to report this correctly when we ask.
Still, I agree it would be nice not to need the command line override. Feel free to file a formal Suggestion to the Issue tracker (see Support menu above) to request this officially.
FWIW, though, Knowing the DPI of your monitor shouldn't be hard. First, it's usually printed somewhere in the documentation, normally on the box itself. But also, you can go to the display settings in your OS, see how many dots wide the display is currently set to, then dividing by the physical width of the display in inches. DPI is literally dots per inch.
Not sure why most people wouldn't be able to run the command successfully, though. The Handbook steps seem pretty clear, and people we direct there report success.
What we should probably add, though, is documentation on how to add command line options to the program itself so you doin;t need to always use the command line. This usually done through some sort of dialog box in your OS (in Linux, through a ".desktop" file).
You operating system knows the number of pixels in x and y direction of the selected screen resolution, you know the size of your screen diameter in inch, the rest is Pythagoras, a² + b² = c². No trial and error involved at all, just a bit of simple math (well, OK, for the square root use a calculator ;-))
Hello All,
I had the Musescore 3 tiny icon issue on my Windows 10 PC. Here is how I fixed the problem:
> Right Click the MuseScore 3 shortcut icon on your Desktop.
> Click "Open file location".
> Right Click "MuseScore3.exe" (this is the program's executable).
> Click "Properties".
> Click the "Compatibility" tab at the top of the window.
Note: I tried using the "Change high DPI settings > check "Override high DPI scaling behavior. Scaling performed by: Application, System, and System (Enhanced)." options, but these did not do anything.
> What I did under the "Compatibility" tab was Clicked the "Run compatibility troubleshooter" and let Windows fix the problem. IT WORKED!!! RESOLVED!!!!
I hope this helps!

Thank you Lucas! This is the perfect solution! It looks like MuseScore3 in not exactly "compatible" with Windows 10. (And I tried MuseScore4 but version 3 is much better as of today)

Both MU3 and MU4 work fine with Windows 10 in general, but each system is different in terms of its display hardware and software, so some customization be needed. Not sure what problem you encountered in MU4, but if you don’t mind the hundreds of bugs fixed since then and vastly inferior engraving and playback, MU3 will certainly do in a pinch :-)
Hey all,
I am using a MacbookAir with my Musescore 3 and I am also having the tiny icon issue. How do I fix it?

By using the command line option -D with a suitable number for the DPI of your screen

Thanks I uninstall and reinstall and it worked.

That is rather unusual and unlikely to fix anything. But as long as long it helped in this case...

I use Linux Mint with a tv as a monitor. I also got the small icons. Had to go to the menu bar and select Musescore, right click and add an icon to the bottom panel. Right clicked as above post and followed that procedure. Chose largest and they are very easy to see now. Many thanks for the good work everyone who helps

Might be late but if anyone sees this, I had the same problem on windows 11 and after trying other methods that didn't work I found that opening Musescore in windows 8 compatibility mode worked like a charm
