Chordlist in mscx file
I have somehow generated a chord list in my current mscx file but I'm not sure how. I can remove it but it gets regenerated. I have removed all chord symbols from the score but the section still existis. How do I switch this off? (The mscz file has grown from 50K to 127K because of the extra lines in the chord list.)

Format > Style > Chor Symbol > Style > Custom
Was the default in MuseScore 1, might have crept in to score via import from there

I did base the score on a download so that is possible. I found a reference to a chords xml file and removed it and now it seems to be ok.

Yes, that XML file gets embedded into the score
