Adding an accent

• Jan 30, 2022 - 18:17

Question, please: I am creating a score and tried to do this to add an accent to the second line of the score. I had added an accent successfully to the top line but can't add it to the second line. I tried both with and without the "Notes" button selected:
First attempt:
-- Opened the "Articulations" palette
-- Selected the note that needed the accent
-- Went to the "accent" symbol and tried to drag and drop it to the note. That didn't work.
Second attempt:
-- Opened the "Articulations" palette
-- Selected the note that needed the accet
-- Clicked on the accent symbol. That didn't work either.
Does it matter that this is the second line in a multi-line score? I have accents on the part above.
Thank you in advance for any replies!

Drag & drop is always slow and less reliable than other methods, so I'd focus on the second attempt. That should have worked. So should pressing Shift+V. In order to understand what special quality of your particular score is getting in the way, we'd need you to attach it, and describe which note specifically you are having trouble with.

Hello, Mr. Sabatella -- thank you for your earlier note! I didn't realize I could reply this way until now, so I just sent another "General Discussion" note.

I've attached both the score and a screen shot - I think I must've just toggled something on that should be off or vice versa. I'm trying to add accents to the tenor sax line in bar six. The clarinet line above that sax line has the accents - is there a connection?

By the way, I just tried to drag and drop a slur - that didn't work, but another method did.

Thank you so much!

Sincerely,
P'nina McCabe

The score stems from MuseScore 3.3.4, so is not latest, 3.6.2, and indeed requires a double click. I guess you got it from the Microsoft Store, which is known to have only that outdated version, see #313298: MuseScore in Microsoft Store is outdated, still at 3.3.4; remove link on Download page (Not Microsofts fault, but MuseScore's!).
Uninstall it and grab the latest version from https://musescore.org/en/download

Double click shouldn’t be needed, and it will actually add two separate markings in some cases.

Unless for some reason you are still on an old version of MuseScore, like from more than two years ago. In that case you do need to double-click. Be sure to update if you aren’t on the current version, 3.6.2. Not just for this improvement, but dozens more, and hundreds of bugs fixed.
