Change staff type
I composed the lyric and then the rhythm. I entered the rhythm in a 5 line percussion staff on the top line, which is snare drum. Now I want to refine it into chords and pitches. In the Handbook, to change the Staff type, it says to drag the Staff type change symbol onto a measure. The Staff type change symbol is an S, but it doesn't seem to exist amongst the Text choices. How can I change this percussion staff with lyrics into notes with lyrics?

No it is not an S, but that icon with the 5 horizontal lines, rendering a normal staff.
The handbook page https://musescore.org/en/handbook/3/staff-type-change needs to get fixed here. That icon changed with 3.6.

Hmm. That is not working for me. So I selected from beginning to end and dragged the staff type change onto the first measure, but nothing happens except for the icon to appear above the staff.

Did you change its properties in Inspector?
Changing the Instrument is not what the Staff Type changed element is for.
Rather just open up the Staff/Part properties and click "Change Instrument" in there to select a pitched instrument instead.
And for future reference, you can use rhythm input mode on a pitched instrument as well if you already know you'll repitch in a later stadium.

Not from the pallet - it's broken #320828: Change Instrument Palette Text does not recognise current instrument leading to incorrect transpositions.
Insert the Instrument change from the menu [Add]>[Text]>[Instrument Change]

If using it to switch from/to a transposing instrument...
And unfortunatlely also when changing to and from some drum staff

Thank you. Before I got your answer, I made another staff and was copying into that. I had to drag the pitch up, but it was not that big of a deal. Now I understand how to get to the Staff/Part properties. That is pretty easy.
It was the first time for me to work this way. Having an unpitched percussion instrument is really useful. I can experiment with any pitches then.
