Splitting bars - crashes

• Apr 2, 2022 - 14:08

My attempts to split bar 4 in this example of a Robert Burns song keep crashing.
The bar needs to be split into eleven 16th notes, followed by the double bar, followed by one 16th note.

OK - so it's an old style of notation, but MS should be able to do this.

My attempt so far is also attached.

Thanks. Did you use my original file? I noticed that the double bar line and the Fine mark had gone.

I went back to my original and it still fails. I was using the same procedure that you mentioned. You have obviously managed it. Could this actually be a system thing - I'm using MacOS Catalina and the latest 3.6.2 version.

I did successfully split a bar on a previous occasion - in another file, but this one doesn't seem to work for me without crashing.

I can carry on with your version - thanks again - but I can't replicate how you got there.

Yes, I used your original file. The split operation removed the double bar.

I am on Windows 10, MS 3.6.2. I'd be surprised if this was a MacOs thing, but perhaps another Mac user could attempt to replicate the problem.

This sort of problem can occur if you make a structural change after parts have been created. I assume the file you attached, which has no parts, is the one you are trying to make the split in.

Several things about this song are troublesome. You can make MuseScore look like this, but playback is another issue without writing out the DC. There are no articles at the beginning of lines 3 and 4 in the second verse which suggest that there are no 16th notes in that verse. I suspect that this song was passed down through time and never really intended to be written down. Plus we have little idea that it has been transcribed accurately. It just depends on whether you need playback or not.

There are indeed a number of troublesome points in this song. I wondered if the split would work if the repeats in the playback are turned off - but that still doesn't work.

It doesn't even seem to be a very good song - but I wanted to try it.
