MS4.1.1.2307 No playback sound, Kubuntu 22.04

I'm having the same problem as others: no playback sound with msbasic soundfonts or with musesounds. The mixer shows signals on playback, whether using MSBasic or MuseSounds. I can export the score as audio (mp3/wav) successfully. Just no playback in the app. MS 4.1.1.2307, Kubuntu 22.04. The MS Basic soundfonts are installed where they belong.
There are no problems with MS3.6x and previous versions.

Your log shows you trying to open a MusicXML file, then immediately quitting it doesn't shoe you attempting to play it. So that is strange. Can you try again and this time create a new score from scratch instead of loading an existing one that might be problematic? Also use the button on the toolbar to play rather than a shortcut just in case the shortcut had been reassigned.

I didn't see anything anything else in the log indicating a problem - I just don't see the line indicating it is even 8trying* to play the score. Should look like:

Also, what audio system are you using on your computer? I'm not an expert in Linux audio, but that could be useful info for someone else that might be able to suggest something.

The XML file was on the history list but not the one I opened. The file I opened was one I created in MS4.1. I have tried creating a new score from scratch but the behavior is the same. Also I have tried the playback button from the toolbar but no sound. The audio system(s) on my Linux is Jack (using ALSA as a backend, I believe) and Pulseaudio. Output is through a Focusrite usb interface. Every other app on my system successfully produces sound, including a few different DAWs, and MS3.6x.
FWIW, here is the output with recent history cleared, and new single-line vocal score created, a few measures of quarter notes, then I clicked play on the toolbar. As I mentioned earlier, the meters on the mixer show a signal, and I can export the audio to a file, which will playback as real sound.

You say: "The MS Basic soundfonts are installed where they belong."
You do not need to install any soundfonts, they are in the appimage, as shown in the log:

I don't know if you installed MuseHub/MuseSounds, but if you did, it will not work since the sampler library cannot be found, as shown in the logs:

That’s correct about MS Basic. But, it’s actually not necessarily a problem to see the error message about Muse Sampler. There are several different places it can possibly be installed and MuseScore will sometimes produce that message to the console if it’s not in the first place it looks even if it is found in the next. I used to see that regularly until I switched to the new beta “Muse Sounds Manager” that is intended to replace Muse Hub on Linux.

Possibly.
But on my system (Utuntu 22.04 LTS) , if the library is not in ~/local/share/MuseSampler/lib/ then it does not work. Library not detected.
And when i installed Muse Sounds Manager, the library under my home directory was upgraded.
I deleted /usr/lib/libMuseSamplerCoreLib.so months ago.
Possibly other Linux flavors behave different, i can only speak for Ubuntu 22.04 (and 20.04).
And no, i do not have any custom library paths.

My sounds are where they have been since the original 4.0 release - /srv/msue-hub. At some point - either when I switched to the beta Muse Hub, or to the Muse Sounds Manager - I was offered the choice to move them, but I declined. You can also see the location in the Muse Sounds Manager (and presumably in Muse Hub).

Sure.
But I was talking about the library libMuseSamplerCoreLib.so
If you think about it, moving away the library away from /usr/lib to the home directory ~/.local/share/MuseSampler/lib/ is a very good thing for security. By doing so, it removes the need for a root account when upgrading the library. So better security. Which was the goal of Muse Sounds Manager in the first place.

Anyway, this does not help the OP.

Thank you for commenting graffesmusic. The soundfonts are in /home/gkhouri/Documents/MuseScore4/SoundFonts/MS basic.sf3. I do have MuseHub/MuseSounds installed, and I did copy usr/lib/libMuseSamplerCoreLib.so to /home/gkhouri/.local/share/MuseSampler/lib/libMuseSamplerCoreLib.so but it had no effect.

I beieve a while back I created /home/gkhouri/Documents/MuseScore4/SoundFonts/ and put the MS basic.sf3 as an attempt to get MS4.1 to play some sound

You might have placed a second copy in the folder you mention for some unknown reason, but that's definitely not where Musescore itself puts them, and any copy in your own folders will be ignored in favor of the one built into MuseScore. So you can safely delete that. I don't think it would cause a problem other than wasting disk space, but I guess you might as well try to see.

The MuseSampler should be OK now. You can check in MuseScore, menu Diagnostic => Muse Sampler => Check Muse Sampler.
But still no sound.
Jack is not supported in MS4. I use Ubunbtu 22.04 with Alsa/Pulseaudio. It does work with my Focusrite Scarlet 2i2 interface, only if this device was first selected in the OS Settings/Sound/Output - before starting MuseScore.
The problem here is that MS always seem to use "system default" (in MS, menu Edit => Preferences => IO => Audio Interface) and nothing else can be selected.
Perhaps there is some relevant info in syslog?

OK, problem RESOLVED at last. My system does use ALSA/PulseAudio, BTW.
It turns out that when MS4.1 runs, it runs an ALSA plug-in for playback, which show up as "ALSA plug-in [mscore4portable]: ALSA playback".
On my system, kubuntu 22.04, you can control it here:
System Settings -> Hardware -> Audio -> Playback Streams.
When MS4.1 launched, that plug-in stream was muted. Why, I don't know. I certainly never muted it. If I unmute it in the systm settings, playback works fine through either the built-in audio, or through the USB interface. It's worth noting that the plug-in show up as a playback device in the PulseAudio Controls panel, but I can't unmute it from there. It has to be done from within system settings. The system seems to remember the mute state between launches.
