Custom Template Opening Incorrectly

• Nov 25, 2023 - 17:22

My custom template is not opening properly. Please help!! I am on a Mac (OS Ventura), running MuseScore 4.

I have saved the template file in the correct folder. Documents > MuseScore4 > Templates

When I open the file directly from the templates folder, it appears correctly, with all my juvenile humor included. Picture 1

When I try to open the template from the "New Score" screen, everything seems fine as well. Picture 2

However, when I click "done", it opens the "jazz lead sheet" template instead of my template. Picture 3

It's important to know that I created my template using the "jazz lead sheet" template as a starting point. But I cannot understand why MuseScore would totally ignore my significant changes to that file and open the original version.

Please help! I'm going to cry lol this is so frustrating.

Thank you so much for replying! There is a "Templates" folder within the MuseScore 4 folder. I was advised to save a .mscz file here, and I believe this is the intended function of the Templates folder (to create custom templates). I tried to attach the file but to no avail.

I made a great many stylistic changes to font and placement of text, spacing of staves, thickness of barlines, appearance of chord symbols, etc. It would be so handy to be able to save a new template with all of these changes so I don't have to re-enter all of those settings when I'm making a new lead sheet.

When I try to open the new template from the "My Templates" window, it opens up with every single change I made missing, as if I never saved the template at all.

Existing score files (.mscz, including template *file ) opened with File>Open command are opened as is.

When you use the "New Score" screen and pick a template, however, a new score is created. A selection of data is reused. The logic is designated by software coders. Some feel the template function can be improved, see ms3 plugin by parkingb https://musescore.org/en/project/score-template. You can suggest a proper feature request proposal to change it but change usually happens when you improve the codes yourself.

The method you used to create custom template is correct.

For ms3, what is created in a new score, when the score is created using a template, is quite clear. See the list at https://musescore.org/en/handbook/3/instruments-staff-setup-and-templat…

  • Font adjustments in Inspector (ms3) or Property panel (ms4) are NOT reused
  • Font adjustments saved into style profiles (Format>style>text style>chord, lyrics etc ; or Property>Three dots>Save as default) are reused
  • Staff adjustments using System Break and Spacer objects are NOT reused
  • Staff adjustments in score style profile (Format>style>score, page, measure etc) are reused
  • Thickness of barlines is saved in score style profile, and is reused (pls report as bug if it is not)
  • All text added on to the score, including Tempo or Chord, are NOT resued (but see font adjustment point above)

For ms4, the software is updated from ms3 , the handbook template page is incomplete https://musescore.org/en/handbook/4/templates-and-styles#templates , see the testing plan written on top. It needs some love. If your machine can run ms4 smoothly, testing out and improving the handbook is supporting free software https://musescore.org/en/donate . It helps other musescore users too. You could include pictures to illustrate what are created or not with template.

I've noticed the confusing message on preview window when template is selected (ms3 and ms4.1.1). Seems that qualifies as a bug, but considering the possible software performance set back to display correctly, I actually prefer the current status and do not report on github.

I agree. The score created from the new score template is totally wrong. The preview is, as noted, correct. But the score that is opened is as though no changes were made. Might as well just open things from the temp folder directly.
