How to add the smaller notes that indicate a second verse has more syllables with the same melody?
I am not sure what this is called, I don't think "grace note" is the appropriate term. I am trying to build a score where the second verse has more syllables than the first verse, but it fits within the same melody/bar. Attached is an example of an Official MuseScore that has it noted exactly how I want to do it.

You'll put the small notes in Voice 2. You probably want to mark them NOT to play. And set them to display as "Cue Notes".

Is that how they accomplished the notation in my screen shot - using Voice 2?

yes
What happens if the third and fourth verses have different syllable counts again? Using voices 3 and 4 would add too much clutter.
When I have a situation like that, I use the shortest duration notes, and join them with a dashed tie. (That's in Finale. I don't know if MS has a dashed tie.)

Musescore 4.2.1 has three varieties of dashed/dotted ties.

Thanks for that, Steve. I looked briefly, but didn’t see those options. Looking in the wrong place, no doubt!
