No internal synth output, Windows XP Pro
After having not run musescore for a few months, i started it up but it will not play any score. The Display->Synthesizer menu selection is grayed. When i click the play button, there is no activity (sound or screen motion). Version: 0.9.6.2

You didn't get a warning at the start of MuseScore about a missing soundfont ?
Can you make a screenshot of your I/O preferences ? Edit -> Preferences -> I/O ?
You can also try to Revert to factory settings

Thanks lasconic! I did the "Revert to factory settings" and now have sound output.
I had not received any warning about missing soundfont.
My problem seems solved, but i've attached the screenshot you requested, along with the musescore ini files before and after the revert to factory settings. The portaudioDevice value looks suspicious! (bad=-10000,good=-1)
Thanks again!

In your screen shot it looks like you just needed to add a check mark next to "Portaudio".

Hi David,
Thanks for your observation. When i put a check mark next to Portaudio, nothing was listed in the Api and
Device boxes to choose from. :(
The Revert procedure pointed out by lacsonic did the trick for me!

For the future readers : you need to check the Portaudio checkbox and restart MuseScore.
