Fun with fonts

• Mar 8, 2012 - 20:52

I am scoring a song with Portuguese lyrics using the JazzLeadSheet template. When entering lyrics I often need letters with diacritical marks such as tildas and cedillas. These letters seem to be only available by using the software keyboard (F2). Problem is those letters are not in the MuseJazz font and the lyrics look a bit like a ransom note! Is there a fix or workaround for this? I would like to keep the handwritten look if possible.

Thank you for your suggestions. I backed up my system, uninstalled 1.1, installed ver. 1.2 and checked the F2 palette. It's pretty much the same between versions. Yes, the extended latin characters are there, but not in the MuseJazz font - just like before. I then loaded MuseJazz in the Character Map to see if the letters in question had been added there, but no - or I'm not following directions correctly.

Problem is: characters from the F2 palette are from a different font and do not match the MuseJazz typeface, hence my lyrics come out looking like a "ransom note".

To solve this problem temporarily, I instead used the "Comic Sans MS" TTF for the lyrics (which has a full character set) and entered the odd letters using ALT+0224 and similar keystrokes to achieve a consistent look. That worked out nicely, fwiw.

Version 1.2 seems stable, btw. I've had an occasional hiccup (printed a page with all characters replaced with odd place-holders once), but nothing that I've been able to duplicate. Save early, save often is my method.

Thank you for your fine, useful and important work!

The f2 palette doesn't actually show the characters in the font you currwntly have selected, but it does enter them that way. Try it. Start typing some text in MuseJazz font, bring up the f2 palette, then click on any of the European characters. You'll see it has been entered into your text using MuseJazz. The only characters that don't always work this way are the special musical characters like the notes, segno, coda, etc. I think that's because MuseScore doesn't realize MuseJazz has these charcaters and thus always switches to Mscore or Mscore1. But you can switch it back to MuseJazz after entering it.

Oh, BTW, if you are seeing MuseJazz in Character Map, it must be because you have installed your own local copy, and probably that local copy is taking precedence pver the one that comes with MuseScore. So you will have to uninstall your local copy before you will be able to access any of the characters ins the "real" MuseJazz. The real version will never appear in Character Map, because it is compiled into MuseScore, not installed separately.
