Publishing

Calling anyone who has ORIGINAL compositions! I'm starting up a company that will publish music for you and sell it, you handle the printing and shipping or sending the parts via email. This maximizes the money in your pocket, returns starting at 50%! (better than most other self-publishing companies) Simply visit this address, http://theboredmusic.wixsite.com/boredmusic/contact and fill out the form if interested! All are welcome to apply! I know that there is untapped talent here and yes, MuseScore is an excellent outlet for works that you don't wish to sell. Please consider selling with us!

Yes, I have this in two forums, that they both apply, sorry if this annoys anyone!

What do you offer?

You clearly state the composer still has to do the printing and shipping and thus carry all the costs and work effort. In exchange for the composer having to do all that work by himself, you take 10% of his profit (according to your site) although here you claim returns are starting at 50%.

You have no mission statement, no legal section and no domain (a domain really is cheap nowadays). You're asking people to donate to you (not invest, but donate) without explaining what their money will be used for.

So please explain what service you think you'll provide that entitles you to a part of the income of the composer.

I manage copyright, and websites are not inexpensive, but I am looking into adding a domain as soon as possible. Similar services only return a maximum of 50% of profit. I also manage the posting etc.. in the future I do hope to be able to offer to print, but at this time I cannot afford to print or ship music. In all reality, if we keep the average concert band score at a typical $80 price point, the composer walks away with a majority of the money. %10 off the top is not much. I also forgot to address that I will sell audio recordings of any kind of music. I'm currently working with two persons who will be exercising this section of me. To also point out, printing isn't expensive. All you truly need is paper and a printer. Yet some publishers take up to double what they need at all.

In short, most publishers take far too much. As a composer myself, I want to make sure there's an option that leaves you, the composer, with the money, not me the publisher. In the end, the only reason I take money is because I need to profit from this. I am just starting out, so yes, I'm asking for people to give us a chance to put up a domain. (Mostly because Wix doesn't like outside domain purchases)

Thank you for your concern

Hosting a site indeed isn't inexpensive, but those costs are scalable. A domain however (boredmusic.com for example) currently is available at about $13.95/year, not the cheapest domain, but hardly expensive. Especially given that most hosters include one free year domain subscription as soon as you sign up to their cheapest plans.

Also, please, please, please, get the correct legal advice. Both on hosting and on copyright. Contact/hire lawyers, you'll need them.
For example, if you keep your hosting at Wix, be aware that you give them a non-revocable license to use any content of your site in their promotional works.

You wish to "manage copyright"; can you elaborate on that? Which legal consequences does it hold? Which laws will you follow? Are you aware that many composers are members of some copyright organisations already, effectively no longer empowering them to transfer (the management of) some of these rights to you.

You claim you cannot afford to print or ship music currently. But you expect/anticipate that the composer can afford this? For me for example, I can print easily on A4 or smaller, but anything larger (conductor scores) will need a printing company (and thus increased costs) anyway.

You mention wanting to sell audio recordings as well. Great! But who will make/provide them? Apparently you seem to have two people who know what this means, but I - a potential user of your service - currently do not.

Don't get me wrong; I think your idea is admirable. Getting a bigger piece of the pie to the people that created the work is a noble goal. But for me personally, your current story is more of a wishlist and a dream, rather than a solid business plan I can confide in.

However, with Wix, they require you to upgrade (to the tune of ~$100 annually because of how the site is designed). Money I cannot budget at this time.

The first order of business is getting some composers under me. In terms of the legal side, I've been getting lessons on the matter so I can manage most of the copyright. It's actually very easy to register copyright, but ensuring the music is "watertight" and isn't free to the public is another thing, and I will likely manage myself.

Managing copyright is again, just making sure we are the only people able to distribute the music. In terms of legal consequences, that will be decided per case. Not every time will it be a legal process, but just reporting that "Hey, they don't have rights to be distributing that!"

Anything of that nature can be talked about with individuals as there are alternatives to the traditional conductor's score that work just as well!

This is more a service for recording artists. One of the musicians I'm working with is a talented vocalist and friend who I write for. Getting the recording done is another detail to be worked out at a later time depending on location and such. Thus why the return is only starting at 50%, because there could be 'blind' costs.

I thank you for taking the time to be putting thought into details that I had not yet addressed. I apologize that some are not exactly a full answer, but so much depends on each person! If you would like to talk deeper into the matter for you as a composer, feel free to send me an eMail at theboredmusic@gmail.com and we can find your perfect solution!
