Add Bb to most of song
Hi I've uploaded a song from a midi file and my problem is trying to pop in a Bb for the key however when I try to drag the Bb Key SIgnature across to the sheets it changes the key that I've already inputted the data. I was wondering if there was a way to add the Bb key signature.
I'm an older basic at-home muso and appreciative for any constructive input.

Hi Julie. If I read you correctly, you are trying to apply a Bb key signature but MS won't let you. It won't let you because the instrument you are using automatically transposes the tune down by a major 6th. You may have thought you've been playing F when in fact you've been playing Ab. Try this. Right click under the rest in the first bar of the song. The stave properties option should now be available. Click on it. Near the bottom of the window it should say: "transpose written pitches to sound". To the right of that there will be a box with "major 6". Change it to "perfect unison". Click OK to leave stave options. You should now be able to apply any key signature you wish. Hope this helps.

Doing this will rewrite the score for a C instrument. I don't think you want to do that. If you want to enter the key of F on an Eb instrument you must transpose the F to a concert Ab and enter the key of Ab on the score. This will put a single flat in the key signature. Entering the key of F will give you the key of D on the transposed instrument.

My approach will result in the tune sounding the same when played in MS.

But all of the notes will be moved and a Saxophone player will have to transpose it on the fly.

If Julie intended for the first chord of the tune to be F in the key of Bb, and the fact the original is in that key suggests that she did, then the notes will be in the right place for a sax player.

If by unplayable you mean some of the notes are out of range of the instrument, then that's true. It's not ideal. But neither would be transposing it up a major 6th, out of tune with the original.

What is a Bb key signature? Got to be Bb Major / g minor, 2 Bs, right?

You're right about the key of Bb, I was thinking she only wanted a Bb in the key signature. If she wants the key of Bb (major) she needs to use the concert key of Db.
