Troubles with note placement
I want a half note to be separate from another half note to make a dotted 16th note but every time I add a half note to it or a sixteenth note, it just connects that half note

I am afraid that I have not understood. What sequence of notes and of what duration would you like to obtain?

I meant to say 1/8th note. The note placements drove me crazy
What your picture is showing is 1/8th notes, not half notes.

Sorry I meant to say 1/8 note.
So, I gather you are saying you really want eighth notes and a dotted sixteenth in some combination, but it still isn't clear exactly what you are trying to do. Normally, you'd have a dotted eighth and sixteenth together, because they form a pair adding up to one beat. And normally these should indeed be connected by a beam, unless you are transcribing vocal music in a 19th century or earlier style, in which case you'd break the beam if the notes are to be sung with different syllables.
Anyhow, to enter a dotted eighth F# followed by a sixteenth B, type "4 . F Up 3 B", or use the toolbar and mouse to do the same thing - eighth note icon, dot icon, click the F space, sharp, icon, sixteenth icon, click the B line. If you then want to break the beam, double click the "Beam start" icon under the Beam Properties palette.
If you want something else, maybe try explaining again, or maybe show a picture of what you want if you arne't clear on the terms.
