Synthesizer disabled
The synthesizer checkbox in the view panel greyed out and I cannot check it. I reset Musescore to default settings, but that did not help.

you can avoid reverting to factory settings by simply downloading and installing a replacement https://musescore.org/en/handbook/soundfonts-and-sfz-files#list

You need to have a score open to be able to open up the synthesizer.

What version of MuseScore, what OS, and how are you starting MsueScore - eg,command line, desktop icon, from file browser? Is there any possibility a "-s" command line is finding its way into the equation? Also did you check the Known Incompatibilities section of he Handbook? I assume, of course, your system actually has audio hardware and the appropriate drivers etc (not a given on, for example, some Linux systems).
I figured it out: Musescore disables the synthesizer when it is not connected to any audio devices. I plugged in headphones and it worked as normal.
