Strings Not Orchestral (Playback)

• Dec 3, 2018 - 17:46

For some reason, the String section (orchestral) is not entering properly. The playback is very peculiar, in fact it sounds as though MS is playing it back as a string quintet sound, with 5 soloist players. I had named the strings as single at first, i.e., Violin I violin 2, etc. and I thought maybe I should change them to plural, viloins 1, 2 etc. in case MS thought I had wanted a single violin. So I tried putting them in the plural, violinS 1.2, m etc. but made no difference. always been more or less happy with the MS orchestral strings playback, but this is wrong khere1 Please see/hear attachment. I have NEVER had this happen before. I don't now if MS playback has been changed lately?. The effect is ludicrous for a symphonic piece.

Hey Del,

I suspect what you are hearing is that the individual strings have "Strings" as the sound assigned in the inspector. Open the mixer (press F10) and change the sounds to Violin, viola and so on to get the sounds of the sections rather than an entire string section for each section.

Since this depends on the sound font you have loaded, let me know if it doesn't work and what sound you actually have assigned to the instruments.

I'm French, so my English.........I try a new version, listen to it
I don't know why , but, all your strings was entered in simple sound 1 violin, 1 viola etc, I see that in the Propriéties of the "partition" in Actuel Instrument. So, I change all your strings, with Orchestra's instrument , with VIOLINS, VIOLAS, etc and I think the result is good SYMPHONY_NO._IV_In_C_Minor_By2.mscz

One other thing I noticed when I put the score into transposed pitch, your C trumpets are in B-flat. This will become VERY obvious when you create parts since the display defaults to concert pitch off.

I don't know why MS entered B flats first on my trumpets I manually changed them to C's. So now how do I stand on parts.? Will that create a problem like Mike said? parts are far in the future on this anyway, as this score is just being written now--just begun.

You can right click the staff for each of the trumpets, select staff properties and click the change instruments button or the left side above the part name. When the window appears, type "C tr" in the search box at the bottom of the new window and you will see the C trumpet. You may need to change the long and short instrument names to your liking again.

I'm not sure what you did when you manually changed the instruments, but it looks like you only changed their names. Looking at the score in concert pitch, you don't see the key signature of the instrument, you need to click the concert pitch button so it doesn't look pressed.

I write all of my original music with the concert pitch button on so I don't have to transpose notes as I'm writing, but I almost always use standard modern instruments like like Bb trumpets, A and Bb clarinets and horns in F. When I click the Concert Pitch button I can see the wide variety of key signatures and all of the notes in the correct place. I then look at the transposed score and decide on clef changes for the horns and adjust ornaments to make them look right. I'm grateful MuseScore makes this so easy.

Yes, I understand this the way you do it. I always do that also, I enter stuff in concert pitch. It's just that I forgot when I started this score, so I had entered the Clarinet already in transposed, then had to re- enter when I went on concert pitch.

Yeas, OK. I had forgotten or never knew about the right-clicking the staff for each instrument, etc.! This also makes me wonder about the Anasazi score, I will have to check. I'm sure I entered C Trumpets correctly, but??
While we are on instrument Properties, maybe this thread would be OK for a related subject: Will MS in the near future fix the playback so MS reads pizzicatto and plays back pizz. when that is entered as staff text in the strings? It would be really nice to hear it that way. You can't have extra plucked strings staves in a regular score to hear the pizz. I recently re-discoverd Anton Bruckner, and loved how he uses woodwinds with strings pizz. a lot, for a marvellous effect!

Sorry, but I don't quite understand that. All this on the one or two regular staves for strings? I thought all you could do would be to create a separate additional staff for pizz playback, and one for bowed strings. And of course I've never seen such a thing in a regular. score.

To change a staff from arco to pizzicato, all you have to do is enter staff text (like pizz, or arco) then right click that staff text. You've seen this many times on scores. Next, select the voices you want to change the effect on (in non divisi single voice music just select voice 1) the use the dropdown to the right of the voices to change the effect. Keep in mind that Normal = arco.

A bit of explanation, this also works for other instruments like Trumpet. The text does not automatically make the change because there are so many ways to tell the musician to do the same thing. On a trumpet you can say

Mutes
Mutes in
Sord.
Con Sord.
Con Sordini

These are only 5 ways I've seen to tell a trumpet player to insert mutes but there are others. I've also seen these words written in French and German. To ensure you can always make the effect play, you must right click it and select the effect you want. What I didn't mention is that you can make voice 1 play open while voice 2 plays muted. As you can see, this method provides a lot of flexibility.

Yes, true. i think I usually see just sord. more than anything else. Also, I didn't realize how you get the effect to play. This explains why I never (that I recall) heard muted brass playback when I had written sord., etc. in my Anasazi score. In the future I will have to remember to right click sord. (?) I guess I got that right.
