Musescore 3 Parts

• Jan 17, 2019 - 03:05

So I have recently updated to Musescore 3 and noticed there was something off, so to speak, about the separate parts within a score I was working on. I've been writing a battery book to a marching show and had created 4 different parts which were a full battery, snare line, tenor line, and bass line. However, unlike in Musescore 2.3.2, when I go into one of these individual parts and listen to the playback, I noticed that all the music in the show is playing when I only want to hear that one part. I hope I explained this well enough to understand what time saying, any help is appreciated. Thank you.

With MS 3, playback generally gives you all parts. You can, however, use the mixer to select/mute parts as you wish.

With MS 2, I had the opposite problem. I wanted to view single instruments, but listen to the whole score or groups of instruments. The solution/workaround at that time was to use the Edit Instruments>Visibility along with the solo/mute functions in the mixer to select the wanted audio.

I kind of like it the way it is now, but I recognize that it may be a frustration for others.

_ I recognize that it may be a frustration for others._

At first I thought it was a terrible idea, but the more I think about it, the more I see it's just a matter of educating people as to why it is this way. There is a proposal to put a button in parts similar to the page/continuous view button that would make it easier to playback only the part. I've seen no further discussion of actually implementing it.

To me, the current behavior is potentially a good idea, but there are two issues:

  • need to do this for each part every time you change parts
  • what happens when you go to "export parts" as audio

I don't think there is a good story for either of these cases right now, but they are not unsolvable. A toolbar button (or something in the mixer) to "solo all parts" could do the job if implemented with this in mind.

BTW, a tour that pops up when you first hit Play while viewing a part seems like it would take some of the heat off this FAQ...

A tour for the current function is a good idea. I think they're good for most FAQs.

My preferred solution is to have a parts toolbar that appears only in parts. It would have a toggle like concert pitch or dropdown like view modes that allows the user to select part or score for playback. I know this would likely complicate the mixer and I don't know of a good way to implement it. The mixer would need to be updated any time a part or score is entered.
