Wish to save customized tablature layout for future use

• Apr 5, 2019 - 20:42

I play steel guitar in various tunings and on instruments with 6, 8, or 10 strings. Altering the standard 6 string guitar tab every time I want to write out an arrangement is a nuisance. I can't seem to find any means to save these custom tablature layouts as templates for future scores. Can it be done? How?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Yes. My custom template is just a line of staff with linked steel guitar tablature (in this case a special 10 string tab I had to create). After opening it, I had no trouble adding additional instruments in the normal manner.

Changing the instruments.xml is not documented well enough for me to give step by step instructions. I suggest that you open the instruments.xml file and find a similar instrument and create a file with only the instruments you are adding to in it. Use the similar instrument as a guide to how to create a new instrument. You may find https://newt.phys.unsw.edu.au/jw/notes.html useful because it tells you which midi sounds are which notes, so if you want to define a string as G3, you know the note its midi pitch 55.

Do you mean you don't know, in general, how to alter the tablature? On a Mac, just 'control' click on the tablature and a menu appears. Click on "Staff properties" and an "Edit Staff" widow pops up where you can modify the tab in various ways: change the number of strings, the tuning, etc. I presume it's similar on other computers.
