  1. Select dotted 1/2 note D in measure 9
  2. Enter cmd-L
  3. Enter "1." to begin verse.

Instead of auto-spacing for first letter attached to selected note, it jumps to 2nd note.

Q. Does this feature work within a score, or only starting at the beginning?

Works fine for me
If you want the 1st syllable to follow the "1." and want it to be separated by a space, while still be attached to that note, use Cmd+Space, that much is by design, a plain space moves to the next note
