removing a rest from a measure
I'm new to this software, and although there are good tutorials and it feels very intuitive, the system keeps automatically putting rests into measures where I don't want them. I can't seem to delete them, even when right-clicking and choosing delete (or using the menu). I tried dragging/dropping them off the page to no avail.
Is this a bug, or am I totally missing something here? It seems like such a basic thing to do.

Welcome, see: https://musescore.org/en/handbook/3/voices#delete-hide-rests
Rests in voices 2, 3 or 4 (but not voice 1) can also be deleted.

Thanks - I'll look into that!

That's because MuseScore always fills the measure with the correct number of rests (or notes) to match the time signature. Actually this is really helpful, and the feature has helped me to spot mistakes in published scores when transcribing an old edition into MuseScore.
You select the first rest where you want to start entering notes, and MuseScore automatically replaces the rest(s) with the note you input. It's very intuitive once you get used to it.

It seems as though this very important and fundamental behavior of the application is more confusing to newcomers than any other. It keeps putting rests, how do I delete them? is asked more than any other recurrent question. Do the tutorial/welcome videos emphasize this? Perhaps more emphasis is needed, explaining that this is not a mistake or a problem, but an artifact of the fundamental model of score supported by the application, and it's a reasonable, good, and straightforward one.
