Ties Do Not Connect to Next Note

I've discovered that after using the first few ties, none of them, when I hit shift and plus to create them, will go to the next note. They end five to six notes later, and I cannot change their placement left or right by physically moving them and touching the notes or with plus and minus. I cannot seem to replicate this in another document, only the one I'm working in. Is it possible I could've accidentally changed a setting? If so, how do I reverse it.
