Lost a Score

• Apr 10, 2016 - 01:05

I just finished entering a score and was checking it for errors when it disappeared from my monitor. What showed up in its place was this nuisance blank score "My first score" which came with this new musescore software, and which I can't seem to delete or get rid of. Is there an automatic backup that saves entries as you make them, so if you make a stupid mistake you don't lose your work? I don't think I made a stupid mistake, but this software is so complicated it seems too difficult for ordinary people like me. Some other music software saves entries (with a time delay you can set) to prevent losing earlier entries. If my score needs re-entering, maybe you can tell me (at least) how to get rid of "My first score" . If I can't delete that no matter how hard I try, how come I can easily lose a score? Woithout knowing more about what happened, it's difficult to say for sure. I'm guessing, though, that you simply clicked on the tab for My First Score, which normally comes up by default every time you start MuseScore. Many people like having that, but if for some reason you don't, just go to Edit / Preferences to tell MuseScore what you'd like to happen on startup instead - load a different score, maybe, or restore your previous session, or just start empty.

Anyhow, if I'm right, you simply clicked on the tap for My First Score. MuseScore, like many if not most other computer programs, allows you to have multiple documents open at once, each in a different tab. Clicking the tab is how you switch between them, and I'm guessing you simply dif that accidentally. So that is why your score was still there - changing tabs doesn't close your score, it simply switches to the other score.

See for example this image, showing tabs for two scores, "Chrysanthemum Man" and "Blues For Alice":

Since your original score remained open when you switched to the tab for My First Score, that is why MuseScore prompted you to save your changes when you shut down. So, indeed, no harm done.

BTW, to close any tab - including My First Score - simply click the "x" within the tab. This is, again, similar to how most computer programs in the world work, including the program I using right now to type this response (Google Chrome).

As for general learning to use the software, I recommend spending time watching all the tutorial videos, also reading the Handbook thoroughly. If you need further help, you can always ask questions here, or consider checking out my book Mastering MuseScore (on Amazon).
