Keyboard shortcuts have stopped working

• May 10, 2011 - 03:43

Hi! I downloaded MuseScore a few days ago and I have been using the keyboard shortcuts as described in the manual with no problems, but today the keyboard shortcuts are no longer working and I cannot figure out why. If I go into note entry mode and press a number for note duration or a letter that corresponds to a note, the program starts cycling between different note durations. If I keep pressing letters or numbers, the program skips to a different measure and makes changes to the rests.

I have checked under Preferences to see if the shortcuts somehow got changed, but they are the same as before. I tried resetting Preferences to default, just in case, and that didn't help.

I am using MuseScore 1.0 (revision 3996) with Windows 7.

Does anyone know what might be going on here?

Aside from restarting the program, which didn't work, I don't know what else to do. I also tried creating a new score, in case it was just that one file, but the shortcuts don't work in the new file either.

Did you find anything that worked for this problem?

Does your keyboard work everywhere else?
I don't exactly remember what I did to make it work again, but if you tell me what you did before your keyboard quit working, I might be able to reproduce your keyboard problem and find a solution.

Yes, my keyboard works in other applications just fine. I've also noticed that when I restart MuseScore, the keyboard shortcuts work for one note and then stop working again.

Unfortunately, I don't know what I did. I was entering notes normally. I suppose I could have pressed some other key by accident.

No good -- I uninstalled the program, re-downloaded and reinstalled, and the exact same problem occurred -- the shortcuts worked for exactly one note and then stopped working again. That's kind of upsetting, because the program loses a lot of its functionality without the keyboard shortcuts.

I was surprised that the program, when I opened it after reinstalling, remembered the changes I had made to the preferences -- but apparently whatever setting is keeping me from using the shortcuts was saved too. This is getting really frustrating.

I don't think the preferences are the issue, since I already tried resetting the preferences to default and that did not solve the problem. Also, when I check the shortcuts settings, they are the way they should be -- they just don't actually work.

I'm not very computer-savvy, so please forgive me for being confused. I thought that uninstalling a program did delete it . . .? And is deleting it in addition to uninstalling/reinstalling likely to help at all?

What was the specific thing you did that made your keyboard work again?

Haha it's ok for not being computer-smart...I'm not that good either. I know just the basics. But any way, what I did was re-open the thing that I did before my keyboard quit working, but I really don't remember what I had opened. But I had re opened it and changed something....I don't remember what but it made my keyboard work again.

I've mentioned this before, but shouldn't we be requesting that the users save the pref(s) files, so that they can be uploaded for examination if a reset solves the problem? It seems to me that so many issues, strange and not, are solved with a reset. This means some corruption or bad setting data must be creeping into the prefs. These bugs should be fixed instead of just deleting the files and restarting without retaining the evidence.

The location depends on what OS. I know where the musescore.ini file is for MS v1.0 under Win7, it's different for XP, Mac and Linux. There are also other "pref" files that MS uses, but I don't recall where they are. I suspect someone else will have to chime in on where the other files are, under different OS's, and if they might be necessary or useful to keep for upload.

guys, click 'add comment' not 'reply'

Oh and at the keyboard shortcuts: It happens to me almost all the time with GTK Radiant on this computer, but totally works on other computers. I think your just unlucky that ur Muse shortcuts don't work. Ah well, back to the mouse and button stuff.

Why? This is a threaded forum. "Reply"ing to a relevant portion of a sub-thread is the proper way to follow the conversation. You may certainly click "add new comment" to start a new comment or thought, but please use the "reply" button on a particular posting so your response is in order in the proper sub-thread.

Probably because he prefers a standard linear view - I do too.

If I'm replying to anything on other forums, I tend to use quote.
