Changing details messes up all formatting

• May 18, 2016 - 00:15

For example when changing one note in a bar to a different rhythm or whatever, musescore changes the nr on bars in a row, throwing the bar I'm currently changing the note in to the previous system. This messes up all the texts, dynamic marks, all these details. I just want to edit one little detail without changing anything else, but musescore kind of "adapts" the layout by itself, eventually working against the user (me).

I'm currently trying to change the key in the middle of the piece and when changing the key signature, it throws everything completely off and I need to drag ALL of the dynamics, crescendo lines, etc, everything to their correct locations.

I hope I was clear enough in explaining my issue.

Did a quick search before but didn't find any similar content.

Thanks for any help and feedback,

It's normal that chnging a rhythm might cause a measure to get bigger or smaller, thus changing how many measures can fit on the line, and thus shifting other measures around as well. just like editing text in a word processor can move words to the next line etc.

But even if the layout changes changes, your other symbols should all adjust automatically, unless you've attach them incorrectly and then tried to use manual adjustment to make it look like they are attached correctly. In that case, the manual adjustment you applied originally might to be correct any more. The solution is to attach the symbols correctly in the first place. That is, don't attach a symbol to one measure but then drag it to make it *look* like it goes with another measure - attach the symbol directly to the measure you want it to go with.

If you think you have added these marks correctly and you are not understanding why they are moving, please attach the specific score you are having problems with and give precise steps to reproduce the problem. Then we can see what you are seeing and let you know what is going on.

I think this is it. I adjust these details manually a lot because they're not the way I like them by default.

For example when crescendo hairpins by default are on top of notes then I just adjust them manually. There are various reasons but this manual editing happens often. Rarely things are "the correct way" by default.

Nothing wrong with manual editing as long at you attach the elements correctly in the first place. As I mentioned, it doesn't work to attach to notes in one measure than drag to appear as if they are in another measure - this pretty mjuc guarantees the adjustment will look wrong as soon as the layout changes. But if you attach them to the correct notes then drag slightly up or down to avoid collisions, that is fine, and this will still look correct if the layout changes. So in general, you should *not* need to readjust things after a layout change - all your manual adjustments will be preserved.

So again, if you have a specific case where you thinkthings are moving that shouldn't be, please post the specific score so we can see what is going on. Otherwise there is little we can do to help.
