Help on only grouping certain amounts of notes

Hi I'm a drummer writing a tricky hi-hat pattern. I have the problem that it will always automatically group a minim's worth of notes (i.e. two groups of four quavers joined together per bar) but I need it to only group a crotchet's worth of notes (i.e. four groups of two quavers joined together per bar). Any ideas on how I split this? Many thanks!
